Jennifer Powers
Hometown: Deerfield, Ohio.
Favorite course to teach: Teacher as Decision-Maker.
Interests/hobbies: Film and theater; hiking and biking; cooking; traveling.
Toughest class I took in college: It's a tie between Tap Dance 101 and Astronomy back when I was at Bowling Green State University.
Something surprising about me: I'm a certified Fire Marshal, and I was a biology lab technician back in high school.
What "the environment" means to me: The environment is wherever I am; the first thing I do whenever I visit a new place is to go and explore and meet some people. I love to note similarities and differences between that place and others where I have been. Environment to me means "being a part of,” in that way.
Research interests: Multimodal literacies in education, particularly those involving media such as film/video.
Best concert I've seen: Oh, that's easy! Spinal Tap at the Beacon Theater in NYC during their "Break Like the Wind" tour. The volume was at about an 11.
Recommended movie: You'll see I can never recommend just one--Mar Adentro and The Tall Guy. Also Truly, Madly, Deeply.
Book I recently enjoyed: Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.
Best place I've traveled to: Honolulu.
Favorite research project with a student: My dissertation study with my tenth graders back in Ohio. We had a blast!
